Dénia is located in the Valencian Community, on the east coast of Spain, halfway between Valencia and Alicante, facing the Mediterranean Sea. It is a bright, welcoming city with a unique Mediterranean charm.
It was an important Roman port and later a strategic enclave during the Muslim period. In 1988, Dénia was declared a Historic-Artistic Site thanks to its heritage and beauty. It is also famous for its fine sandy beaches, its cuisine —especially red prawns— and its lively atmosphere all year round.

Dénia Castle is a place you must visit at least once in your life because it has some of the most beautiful views of the entire Costa Blanca. From the top, you can see the whole city, the port and the Mediterranean Sea.
In Dénia, there are several beautiful viewpoints, such as the Mirador del Castillo or the Mirador del Montgó, from where you can see the entire bay. It is also worth taking a stroll through the Montgó Natural Park, perfect for losing yourself in nature and breathing in the fresh air.
Don’t miss the Cova Tallada, an impressive natural cave open to the sea, located in the Cabo de San Antonio Marine Reserve. It is a magical place that can be reached on foot or by kayak.
Other places not to be missed are the Port of Dénia, ideal for watching the sunset; the Paseo Marítimo, perfect for walking by the sea; and the Barrio Baix la Mar, the old town, with its narrow streets and colourful houses. It is a charming place to wander around aimlessly.
We also really like the Mercat Municipal, where you can see fresh local produce and experience the Mediterranean essence of the city. And if you like history, the Archaeological Museum of Dénia, located in the castle itself, will take you on a journey through its Roman, Muslim and Christian past.
Dénia is famous for its excellent Mediterranean cuisine and for having a wide variety of bars where you can enjoy tapas. The best areas are the port, the Baix la Mar neighbourhood and Calle Loreto, which are full of lively terraces.
You can’t leave without trying Dénia’s red prawns, a true local symbol, or a delicious arroz a banda (rice dish) by the sea. Other typical dishes include espencat (roasted vegetable salad) and suquet de peix (seafood stew).
For tapas, we recommend Ca Pepa Teresa, El Raset or Els Tomassets. If you want fresh produce, stop by the Mercat Municipal, where you can also eat at small bars.
And to finish off, a stroll along Calle Marqués de Campo with a homemade ice cream is the perfect way to enjoy Denia.
In Dénia, you will also find expressions and words that are very typical of the Valencian Community, especially in the coastal area.
For example:
‘Xe!’: a very common exclamation that can express surprise, anger or joy, depending on the tone.
‘A vore’: means ‘let’s see’ and is used in the same way as in standard Spanish, but with a local accent.
‘Collons’: a very typical (colloquial) interjection, similar to ‘oh my God!’ or ‘wow!’.
‘Fadrí / fadrina’: means ‘single’.
‘Xiquet / xiqueta’: means ‘boy / girl’ (also used affectionately to address someone).
It is also common to hear ‘clar que sí’ as an affirmative tag and expressions such as ‘de categoria’ to say that something is excellent or very good.
And if someone tells you that you are an ‘apañà’ or ‘maja’ person, it means that they consider you to be friendly or helpful — just like in many areas of the Spanish Mediterranean.
You must experience the Fallas de Dénia, held in March, at least once in your life. For several days, the city is filled with music, light, parades, fireworks and spectacular Fallas monuments that end up burning on the night of La Cremà.
Another unique event is the Fiesta de Bous a la Mar in July. It is held in the port: a bull is released into an open square and the bravest try to make it fall into the water. It is a tradition that has been declared of National Tourist Interest.
Also noteworthy are the Patron Saint’s Day celebrations in honour of the Santíssima Sang, with processions, concerts, fireworks and a very lively atmosphere throughout the city.
And if you visit Dénia in summer, don’t miss the open-air festivals, concerts and decorated streets: it’s the most festive time of the year. 🎆🎺✨
