Learn more about Barcelona

The interior of the Sagrada Familia. The decoration is inspired by nature, which is why you can see that the columns are shaped like trees! Seeing the light coming through the stained glass windows is magical.

There are many places in the city where you can see the works of the great Catalan architect Gaudí: Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, Park Güell… As for museums, we recommend you to visit CosmoCaixa. It is the science museum in Barcelona and one of the most important in Spain. Moreover, its architecture is very beautiful.

Another place you should go to is Los Bunkers, which is an area of Barcelona in the Carmel neighbourhood. There are huge stones where you can sit and see the whole city. People usually bring food from home or beers and have a picnic.

We also really like the Parc del Laberint d’Horta, beautiful gardens and you can get in for free. Montjuïc, with its castle, is another place you must visit. We also like the Olympic Games Stadium, which was held in Barcelona in 1992.

The Catedral del Mar, which is not really a cathedral, it’s a basilica, but it’s very beautiful, it looks like a fairytale. At Christmas, in front of it, they hold the Fira de Santa Llúcia, which is very famous in Barcelona. It is a Christmas market where they sell figurines for the Nativity Scene and, above all, the most famous one: the caganer, a peasant making poo, but nowadays they do it with figures of famous people.

Calçots and a good alioli (garlic mayonnaise). Calçots are a type of spring onion, eaten with romesco sauce (typical sauce of the region). Aioli is a very popular sauce, which you can eat all over Spain, but its origin is from this area. It is a very tasty garlic sauce, which we like to accompany many foods.

Cacaolat is the best chocolate milkshake in the world, you must try it! You can drink it hot or cold and it is available in all supermarkets.

We recommend the restaurants on Barceloneta beach. You have the Salamanca Restaurant (Carrer de Pepe Rubianes, 34) and you can order a very good paella. The Marina Bay (Carrer de la Marina, 19-21) where you can have a cocktail and look at the sea. In the centre of Barcelona you have Patrón (Travessera de Gràcia, 44), a great place to eat seafood.

In Barcelona they speak Catalan, which is the co-official language. Catalan is the most widely spoken co-official language in Spain, along with Spanish, which is why many of the expressions they use the most are in Catalan:

“Déu-n’hi-do” means “quite a lot”. For example, when you are asked: “Are you hungry?” and you answer “déu-n’hi-do”, it means that you are quite hungry. To say goodbye, everyone says “Adéu siau”. To say “verdad que sí?” they use “oi?”. “Això és can pixa” is used to say that someone does what they want without caring about others.

Sant Jordi is a very typical Catalan festival. It is Valentine’s Day and Book Day for the Catalans.

On Sant Jordi’s day, men give a red rose to women, and women give a book to men. Nowadays, women and men give books and roses as gifts.

The festivities in the Sant Andreu del Palomar neighbourhood. At this festival you can see the correfoc, where a group of people dressed as devils parade through the streets running, dancing and jumping amidst fireworks.

La Mercè is Barcelona’s festival. There are many activities in the city: concerts, open-air activities, sardana dancing (typical Catalan dance), castellers (people who make human castles), and everything is free. The giants are people dressed up as giant historical characters.
