Learn more about Madrid
You can not leave without seeing Malasaña, Chueca, La Latina or the Barrio de las Letras. You can stroll through El Retiro Park and see La Fuente del Ángel Caído (The Fountain of the Fallen Angel) as it has a peculiar history: it is placed exactly 666 meters above sea level so many people consider it a gateway to hell and associate it with the disappearance of an ancient cemetery that was located in the area. The best time to visit Madrid? In autumn. The Retiro Park is beautiful during this season.
A good way to see the Gran Vía from above is to climb to the top floor of the Corte Inglés in Callao.
Do you like flamenco? You can’t leave Madrid without visiting a flamenco tablao.
You can’t miss the sunset from the Sabatini Gardens, from where you can see the Royal Palace, it’s beautiful! Also, you have to visit the Km.0 in Puerta del Sol, the point where all the roads in Spain start. Another of the best spots to see the sunset is the Templo de Debod.
And the Sunday flea market in La Latina! This is a market where you can find everything: second-hand clothes, antique furniture, vinyls…
The bocadillo de calamares (squid sandwich) in the Plaza Mayor, it’s delicious! You can order it in many bars in the area, but our favorite is Bar La Campana.
Cocido madrileño is a typical Madrid dish with chickpeas, vegetables and meat. You can try the best cocido at the well-known Bar Malacatín, on Calle de La Ruda, 5, or at Restaurante La Bola, on Calle de La Bola, 5.
For tapas, we recommend you go to Cava Baja, a street where you will find many bars that will give you a free tapa when you order your drink.
If you want something sweet, either for breakfast or a snack, don’t forget to go to the chocolatería San Ginés, and have a chocolate con churros.
“Mazo, me renta mazo”. “Mazo” means a lot. “Me renta” means that something seems beneficial to you. Something a Madrileño always says is “yo soy de aquí de Madrid” (I’m from here in Madrid) no matter where you are in the world. “Llego en cero coma” to say that you are going to arrive soon. Your friends are your “troncos” and your “troncas”. “Pagar a pachas” means to pay by halves, in Spain we usually split the bill when we go out for beers with friends. “El agua de Madrid es la mejor” (Madrid water is the best). Madrid tap water is said to be very good, and the people of Madrid are very proud of it.
San Isidro shows the true culture of Madrid. If you go to La Pradera, you will see old people dressed as chulapas and chulapos (typical dress) dancing chotis (typical dance). It is typical to eat cocido and rosquillas tontas y listas (doughnuts). It is celebrated the week of the 15th of May. During that week, there are many events all over the city, but the most important one is in La Pradera de San Isidro.
La Verbena de La Paloma is a festival held in summer in La Latina, in honor of the Virgen de La Paloma. The streets are decorated with lights and garlands, and in almost all of them there are competitions of Manila shawls, balcony decorations, chotis… People drink lemonade and tinto de verano. Women wear a red or white carnation in their hair and men wear a carnation in their jackets.
