Learn more about Málaga

The Alcazaba is a fortification of the Muslim era built in the eleventh century at the foot of Mount Gibralfaro. Inside you will find a beautiful complex of palaces, gardens, fountains and courtyards, among which are the Puerta de los Arcos, the Plaza de Armas and the Torre del Homenaje.

Don’t forget to stroll along Calle Larios, one of the most elegant and expensive shopping streets in Spain. At the end of this street, you will see the Plaza de la Constitución, one of the most important squares in the city. The surrounding architecture is magnificent, with historic buildings such as the Escuela de San Telmo and the Casa del Consulado. The beauty of the Fuente de Génova, a marble fountain from the 16th century, stands out. We recommend that you have a drink on a terrace in this square and enjoy the views.

A few meters from the Plaza de la Constitución, on Calle Compañía, you can visit the Carmen Thyssen Museum, with one of the most important collections of Spanish painting of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. In addition, this museum is located inside the Villalon Palace, an old house with a wonderful architecture that is worth seeing. Do you like visiting museums? You can’t leave without seeing the Picasso Museum, the most important museum in Malaga. We also recommend you to visit the Centre Pompidou, the contemporary art museum in Paris, with a cube shape that has already become a symbol of the city.

You can not miss the Cathedral of the Incarnation of Malaga and its tower popularly known as “La Manquita”. The construction of this building took about 200 years.

If you want to enjoy incredible views of the city, you can not leave without visiting the Gibralfaro Castle. On the hill of Gibralfaro you will find two viewpoints that are perfect to enjoy the sunset with the Mediterranean in the background.

Malaga has a lot of beaches, but a must visit is the Malagueta. It is located in the historic center of the city and stretches for several kilometers. There are many beach bars where you can have a drink with your friends before taking a swim. We recommend you to go to the old fishermen’s quarter of Pedregalejo and try the espetos de sardinas (sardine skewers).

Have tapas in front of the Roman Theater in El Pimpi, one of the best bars to enjoy some good tapas with your friends and enjoy the terrace with its views.

Malaga’s gastronomy is very rich and stands out for its fish and seafood, here are the dishes you can’t miss!

The espetos de sardina (grilled sardine) are very characteristic of Malaga. Go to a beach bar and enjoy them. The thin shells are very typical of the entire coast of Malaga, remember to accompany them with a little salt, pepper and lemon. The fried anchovies with lemon is a star dish of Malaga.

Cold dishes are very important in Malaga’s food to be able to face the high summer temperatures, the porra antequerana is a fresh soup that is very similar to salmorejo. Another typical cold soup of Malaga is the ajoblanco soup, with ground almonds, bread, garlic and oil. Malaga salad with boiled potato, cod, orange and olives is a mixture of flavors that will not leave you indifferent.

One of the most common tapas in Malaga is the caldillo de pintarroja. It is a fish broth made with pintarroja (small shark from the bay of Malaga). It can be accompanied by other fish, clams or prawns. Together with Malaga olives, it is the perfect accompaniment to a cold beer.

Fancy something sweet? You have to try the bienmesabe de Antequera and the tortas locas. If you visit Malaga at Easter, don’t forget to order some torrijas de vino dulce.

A Malagueño will tell you that a “pechá” is “mucho”. He will pay you with “guita” instead of money, and they are always “aliquindoi” which means “to be attentive”.

A very thin person is “escuchimizá” and a person who is very tired is “guarnía”.

Malagueños are not exactly “goniosos” which means to be greedy. They don’t waste their time with “chuminás” (nonsense) and if you do, they can “soltar una piña” (give you a punch).

The Malaga Fair is surely one of the most popular festivals. It is usually held during the second half of August every year. It begins with the reading of the proclamation on the Malagueta Beach and continues with a fireworks display and musical performances. It also takes place, that same Friday night, the lighting of the lighting of the front of the Real de la Feria in the Cortijo de Torres.

At the Malaga Fair you can enjoy horseback riding, taste Malaga wines and its most typical tapas and enjoy performances by national artists at the night fair in the Real de la Feria.

The Carnival of Malaga, which has been held since 1981, during the month of January or February at the Teatro Alameda and Teatro Cervantes. It lasts about 10 days approximately in which you live the competition of groups, the grand finale at the Teatro Cervantes, the proclamation, the parade, the big parade and the burial of the anchovy. During these days you can enjoy the groups, murgas and comparsas, which perform songs with the purpose of criticizing the social situation of the moment. These criticisms are made in a burlesque way in the case of the murgas, or in a poetic way in the case of the comparsas.

And finally, you can not miss the Holy Week in Malaga. The locals, along with the thousands of people who come to visit the city, gather in the streets and squares of the city. All the brotherhoods of Malaga have amazing thrones that walk through the streets accompanied by musical bands that make it something magical. Among them are the Cofradía del Cautivo, the Cofradía de la Expiración and the Cofradía de la Congregación de Mena.
