Learn more about San Sebastián

La Concha is the first obligatory stop you have to make in San Sebastian. It is the most beautiful urban beach in Europe, and one of the best beaches in the Basque Country. Stroll along its modernist-style promenade, and you’ll come to the Miramar Palace. In this area you can see several buildings where the European aristocracy used to spend their summer holidays. You must also see the Balneario de la Perla, where you can relax overlooking the sea, and the Town Hall.

During this tour, you will have views of the small island of Santa Clara, located in the middle of the bay, which you can reach by boat. There are several paths, a small beach and a lighthouse where you can take the best photos.

The Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, located south of the Old Town, is a beautiful cathedral inspired by the cathedral in Cologne, Germany. After visiting the cathedral, you can take a stroll through this neighbourhood, known as the romantic centre for its Parisian style, and reach the beautiful Plaza Gipuzkoa, where you will see the Diputación building with its beautiful gardens.

The Old Town, located at the foot of Mount Urgull, has many narrow cobbled streets. It is considered to be the most charming neighbourhood in San Sebastian. We recommend starting your route on Calle Mayor (Kale Nagusia), which will take you to the Basilica of Santa María del Coro. Near this church, you will find the Plaza de la Constitución, which used to be a bullring and where you can see the numbering of the balconies. Another church you should see is the church of San Vicente, one of the oldest. After visiting these places, go to Calle 31 de Agosto or Calle Mayor itself to start a route around the best pintxo bars.

The Paseo Nuevo is another essential place to see in San Sebastian, although you must be careful with the state of the tide, as the waves can hit hard. This walk lasts an hour and you can start at the port, passing the mouth of the Urumea, until you reach the Zurriola Bridge. Next to this bridge you can see the Palacio de los Congresos and the Kursaal Auditorium, home to the famous Film Festival. If you still have energy, you can climb Mount Urgull and enjoy the panoramic view of the city. But the best views are undoubtedly from Monte Igueldo. You can go up by funicular, which is also the oldest in the Basque Country (1912).

The Peine del Viento, located at the end of Ondarreta Beach, is a work of art by the sculptor Eduardo Chillida. The waves enter this area of the beach with great force, which is why the sculptor said that they should enter already combed. You can take some incredible photographs from this spot and enjoy the sound of the force of the waves.

The Basque Country is a world surfing destination, and San Sebastian its European city. You can’t leave without learning this fantastic sport on Zurriola Beach or in Zarautz.

Zurriola is the most popular surfing beach in San Sebastian and has several surfing clubs and schools. Zarautz beach is the cathedral of Basque surfing, with a length of 2.5 kilometres. Here you will also find the Pro Zarautz event, which is part of the qualifying phase for the World Surf League.

Remember that the Basque Country is very famous for its pintxos, so you can’t leave without taking this route! These small tapas have become very popular. Among the most famous are the potato omelette, txangurro (shredded spider crab), anchovy, txistorra, cod, among many others.

Among the most traditional bars are Mendaur, Txepetxa, La Espiga, Iturrioz, La Cuchara de San Telmo, Sport, Néstor, Juantxo and don’t forget to try the cheesecake at La Viña.

Don’t forget to try the bacalao al pil pil (cod in a garlic, olive oil and chilli sauce), marmitako (fish stew served in a clay pot with potatoes and onion, tomato and pepper sauce), cod omelette, Tolosa beans (accompanied by baby squid in its own ink).

Fancy something sweet? Try the cheese with walnuts and quince jelly, rice pudding or curd.  The must-try is the Basque cake, a very old recipe that has been reinvented over the years. It is made with custard, vanilla and ground almonds. The Basque cross or lauburu is added to the top as a decoration. Another sweet not to be missed is goxua, a cake made with cream, sponge cake, custard and liquid caramel.

And what to drink? There are several traditional drinks that you should try, such as txakoli wine or the popular cider.

In the Basque Country, the official languages are Basque and Spanish. The origin of Basque is unknown, although there are many hypotheses about it.

A Basque will greet you with “kaixo” or “aupa” and say goodbye with “agur”. On your birthday, they will say “zorionak”. “Ondo pasa” means “have a good time”. If you want to drink cider, you should look for “sagardotegia” (cider house) and ask for “sagardoa” (cider).

If you go to Donostia, you go “poteo” which is going from bar to bar and ask for a “zurito” which is a small glass of beer.

Don’t miss the San Sebastian Film Festival. It is the most prestigious festival in Spain and one of the most important in Europe. Every year, several prestigious actors walk the red carpet at the Kursaal for this festival. It is the most important film festival in Spain and in Spanish-speaking countries as a whole, as well as one of the longest-running and most prestigious in Europe.

The Semana Grande de San Sebastian, on 15 August, from Saturday to Saturday. During these days, the whole city dresses up and many activities take place. The cannon fire is the starting point of the Semana Grande Donostiarra. It is held on the first day in the gardens of Alderdi Eder at 19:00 hours. One of the most important elements of the Semana Grande is the International Fireworks Competition, in which companies from all over the world take part.

The Caldereros is a festival that dates back to 2 February 1884, the year in which the Hungarian Caldereros paraded for the first time. Over the years it has become one of the most traditional festivities.

Iñudes and Artzaiak is a carnival festival held the day after the Boilermakers. All the participants dress up as shepherds, child minders, mayors and even bishops. There are troupes in the streets and people dance and enjoy the choreographies of the puppets.

The festival of Santo Tomás is held on 21 December. On this day, San Sebastian is transformed into a rural market where txistorra (a type of sausage) becomes the star of the show.

The Tamborrada is one of the most popular fiestas in San Sebastian. It is held on 20 January and on this day a great tamborrada (drum concert) takes place. It is not known where this custom comes from, but it is related to the soldiers’ battalions against the French and English armies. It is said that the townspeople used to imitate the battalions by playing with spoons, plates and pans to mock the presence of the enemy.
