Why take an intensive Spanish course in Valencia?

Valencia is the capital of the Valencian Community. Did you know that it was a city founded by the Romans? You can still find some ruins from this period.

It is also a Mediterranean city with almost 20 kilometres of beaches. A safe, comfortable destination, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, it has become one of the favourite cities to study Spanish. It is the most chosen city by Erasmus students!

Learn more about Valencia

The historic centre of the city. The Cathedral, with its three doors, one of each style (Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque) and its tower, El Micalet (Valencian name for the Miguelete).

You can’t leave without strolling through the longest park in Europe on the old Turia riverbed, which crosses practically the entire city, without discovering the maritime villages and their beaches and above all without eating a paella and watching the sunset over the Albufera.

We recommend you visit the Central Market, where you can buy typical products from the Valencian market garden. La Lonja de la Seda, a beautiful building that is a World Heritage Site. The towers of Quart and Serranos, the remains of the old wall that protected the city. You should also visit the palace of the Marquis of Dos Aguas, the only National Museum that is not in Madrid. And, above all, we recommend you get lost in its narrow streets full of charm and history. Other places not to be missed are the Plaza de la Virgen, the Barrio del Carmen and the famous City of Arts and Sciences.

Another must-see is the Albufera, a natural park just 10 kilometres from the city, where it is said that you can see the best sunsets on a boat in Valencia. Here you will understand the origin of Valencian gastronomy, and what better place than surrounded by rice paddies!

Valencia is known as the city of running, so if you want to enjoy running the almost 8 kilometres in the heart of the city centre without any stops, get your running shoes on and make the most of it!

Horchata and paella. But, you may ask, what is this?

Horchata is a fresh drink made with water, sugar and tiger nuts (small tubers typical of the orchards in this part of Spain). If you want to try it in the place where it was born, go to one of the many horchaterias in the orchards of Alboraya, and accompany it with some fartons! The horchatería Panach is a classic in Alboraya.

Paella, we believe, needs no introduction, as any tourist who has visited Spain has tasted paella (or perhaps it was “arroz con cosas” (rice with things)? You’ll have to ask a real Valencian to find out). The tradition in Valencia is to eat paella on Sundays with family and friends, so if you want to try the best paella in town, you have to have a Valencian friend! You also have the option of trying it in one of the restaurants that you can find in front of the beach in Paseo de la Patacona, and enjoy paella with friends in front of the sea. The paellas in this area are usually cooked over a wood fire, so you will always have to reserve your table and paella so that you don’t miss out.

Also, during Fallas (a typical festival in Valencia) you can try the pumpkin fritters, they fill the city with stalls where they make them and you can buy them.

In a bar in Valencia we don’t ask for an iced coffee, we ask for a “café del tiempo”. And if you go to “hacer unos cervezas” (have a few beers with friends) ask for some “cacaos” and “olivas” (peanuts and olives).

Imagine this scene: you take out your mobile phone and show your Valencian friend the paella you ate in Madrid when you went with your parents. Your Valencian friend will look disgusted and say: “That’s not paella, that’s rice with stuff”.

“Nano” is something you will hear in Valencia, it is the colloquial way of referring to your friends. A typical thing when you ask a Valencian “Where are you from?” is that they answer “De la terreta”, which is what identifies true Valencians. And, by the way, if a Valencian tells you that something is “a fer la mà”, it means that it is very far away and that you have a long way to go.

You can’t miss Las Fallas, declared a Festival of Tourist Interest by Unesco, and it also appears on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This festival is held from 15 to 19 March. It begins with the plantá and ends with the cremá.

In the plantá we can see in the streets the different fallas (huge statues) with the ninots (each one of the characters that make up the falla) that have been built over the course of a year. On the day of the cremá, the fallas are burnt.

In Las Fallas we can see the girls and women dressed in the fallera costume, a very pretty and colourful costume, accompanied by a typical hairstyle and something difficult to do.

It is a festival where there are many fireworks displays and also the famous mascletá, a very noisy and rhythmic fireworks display.
