Why take an intensive Spanish course in Sevilla?

Seville is located in southern Spain and is the capital of the region of Andalusia. Learn more about Sevilla

The Real Alcazar of Seville is the visit we all have to do, one of the oldest palaces in use in the world. Did you know that it is the residence of the Royal Family of Spain when they visit Seville? Game of Thrones has also been filmed there! The Alcazar is Dorne in the series. Unesco declared it a World Heritage Site in 1987, along with the Cathedral of Seville and the Archivo de Indias.

We cannot forget the Plaza de España. In addition, Star Wars was filmed there. Also, for all those sunset lovers, you must visit Las Setas de Sevilla, a spectacular architectural work, you have to visit it. You have to go up to see it. You can enjoy views of the whole city from the center of Seville.

Seville is the city of churches, so you can visit many of them. We recommend visiting the Church of San Luis de los Franceses.

On the other hand, the Rectorate of the University of Seville, a former tobacco factory, is a place to visit. It is very close to the Hotel Alfonso XII, which is the 13th most luxurious hotel in Europe and with a very special style. You can not miss the Triana neighborhood and its bars, the Triana bridge and the Guadalquivir river. In addition to all these sites there are also the Murillo Gardens, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Contemporary Art Center, the Cartuja Monastery and the Lagoh shopping center or the Torre Sevilla.

We recommend the Giralda, a beautiful place. La Giralda is the name given to the bell tower of the cathedral of Seville. It is part of the skyline of the city. The Palacio de Las Dueñas and the famous Triana Bridge are places you must see when you visit the city.

Seville is one of the greenest cities in Spain, with 22 square meters of green area per inhabitant. There are currently more than 170 different botanical species, but the orange tree stands out above all. The orange blossom of the orange trees in spring, azahar, gives the city a very characteristic floral scent in spring.

Two of the main parks where you can enjoy this variety of gardens are the Maria Luisa Park, in front of Plaza de España, and the Alamillo.

Visit the Dehesa de Arriba. It is a natural park that belongs to Doñana and you can see many birds and animals.

No one can leave Seville without trying the marinated dogfish (fish breaded with spices) from Sierpes street or croquetas from Casa Ricardo (Calle Hernán Cortés 2). The pescaíto frito (fried fish with salt) is very common in the bars and is part of the tapas culture. You also have dishes like salmorejo (cold tomato and garlic soup) and gazpacho (fresh drink typical of summer containing tomato, cucumber and garlic), spinach with chickpeas, sirloin with Whiskey, tripe or montaítos (small sandwiches with different fillings) of all kinds, you also have to try them. As a curiosity, the oldest bar in Seville is called El Rinconcillo, open since 1670.

On the other hand, there is also the more elaborate and modern food such as that served in Perro Viejo (in front of the Faculty of Fine Arts), and all the exotic bars of the Alameda and Bar Garlochí, very typical in Boteros street 26.

Typical dishes that you can find in many places are carrillada (meat dish made with pork or cow cheeks), albóndigas de choco (choco is a kind of squid), and don’t forget to order a plate of prawns and a pitcher of ice-cold beer at Bar Triana (Calle Castilla, 73).

The rebujito is an alcoholic drink made with manzanilla or fino wine with a lemon-lime and mint flavored soda, and it is typical to drink it during the Feria de Abril.

In the rest of Spain, it is said that Sevillians are very economical in language. By this, they mean that many times they don’t pronounce some letters or put together some words creating a new one. Here are some examples:

“Quillo!” (there is also the variant “illo/ illa” It is used to refer/call a person. It is the short form of “chiquillo”. For example: Quillo! Come here!)

“No ni ná!” Means no ni nada. Another equivalent expression you may hear in the rest of Spain is “anda que no”. Here are some examples so you can understand its use:

– You haven’t eaten anything

– No ni ná, I’ve eaten two plates.

“Miarma!” means “my soul”. This expression may seem very affectionate, but in Seville they can say it a lot without being in love with you. If something bothers you you can say: “¡Vaya tela miarma! Or if you are happy and you ask in a bar you can say: “Today I’ll have a little montaito de gambas alioli, miarma!

“Chacina” is what in the rest of Spain they call “embutidos”. Chacina is part of the tapas.

You must visit Seville during Holy Week and the April Fair.

In the Feria de Abril the atmosphere is incredible, and although it is the only fair where 90% of the booths are private, the atmosphere is so good that you always end up making new friends. It is characterized by the sevillanas (typical dance), the impressive flamenco dresses, the horse-drawn carriages, the casetas, the rebujito and the celebration until late at night.

Another very important festival in Seville is the Holy Week, where we will see the processions. Holy Week in Seville has been celebrated since the 16th century and has universal fame. About 50,000 people dress up as nazarenos to parade in the 58 processions that are organized, while the “costaleros” carry the pasos (religious images) on their backs.
