Why take an intensive Spanish course in Granada?

Granada is located in the autonomous community of Andalusia, in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. It is a magical, poetic and culturally rich city.

It was the capital of the Al-Andalus kingdom from the eighth century to the fifteenth century, something that can be seen in the architecture of the city. The Alhambra and the Albaicin neighborhood were named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984.

Learn more about Granada

The Alhambra at least once in your life because it is one of the most beautiful places you can see in Spain.

In Granada there are many viewpoints, such as the Mirador de San Cristobal or the Mirador de San Nicolas. They have views of the Alhambra and corners of the city. You should also go to El Carmen de los Mártires to get lost in its gardens, they are beautiful!

We recommend you to visit the Caves of Sacromonte, located in the valley of Valparaiso, in front of the Alhambra. At the end of the 15th century Jews and Moors lived there. From the 16th century, the gypsies began to use these caves as houses. Many of them can be visited, some have also been converted into bars and in others there are flamenco shows.

Some places you can’t miss are La Fuente del Avellano, the Alhambra forest in autumn, La cuesta de los Molinos (near the Paseo de la Bomba and near Angel Ganivet’s house). But without a doubt, I think there is nothing more beautiful than leaving the map aside and getting lost in the streets of the Albaicín and Realejo without a specific direction.

We also really like the Corral del Carbón, the best preserved Nasrid alhóndiga in the whole Iberian Peninsula. It has very beautiful roofs, similar to those of the Alhambra. You can visit it for free, it transports you to the Muslim Granada!

Granada is known for its generous tapas. For tapas I recommend a stroll through the Plaza de Toros, Ganivet area or Gonzalo Gallas street. Also in Pedro Antonio street you can find many bars.

You can not leave without trying the Maritoñis. It is a typical sweet of Granada, you can find it in many places. Of course, we must also mention piononos, sponge cakes soaked in syrup, with cream and a toasted coronilla. The best piononos can be found at the Casa Ysla.

In the Bib-Rambla square you can eat some delicious churros con chocolate, with views of the cathedral of Granada, which is beautiful.

There is a bar called Los Diamantes (Plaza Nueva, 13) It is our favorite bar! They serve fried fish or a paella tapa with every drink you order.

We recommend the bocadillo de habas con jamón at Bar Aliatar (Calle San Antón, 67). We also have the remojón granadino, of Arab origin, its main ingredient is cod.

The dish you must try is olla de San Antón, a typical local tapa (stew with beans, rice and meat) and the ensaladilla of Cunini (Plaza Pescadería, 14). Ah! and for tapas we recommend Los Manueles (Calle Reyes Católicos, 61) or El Mentidero (Calle Piedra Santa). Another emblematic place you have to visit is Bodegas Castañeda (Calle Almireceros).

In Taberna la Tana you can taste the best wines, cheeses and sausages of Granada and Andalusia.

You have to go to Elvira Street, in the Arab quarter, where there are many Moroccan and Arab tea shops and restaurants at very good prices. In this street you can also buy souvenirs in Arabic style.

“Lavín”, for example, “lavín qué calor”, which means “la virgen, qué calor””. “Chuminá”, which means “nonsense”. “Estoy enmayao”, which means “I am very hungry” and “chavea” which means “boy”.

“Aes” is a little phrase used at the end of sentences to confirm that our interlocutor is understanding what we are saying, synonymous with “do you know?” but in the Granadian style.

A granaíno or granaína for someone friendly or helpful is referred to as an “apañá” person.

You must go to the Corpus Fair (Feria de Granada). Inside the “casetas” you can find different atmospheres: with music, dancing, drinking, food… We recommend you to go to the “casetas” and drink wine from the different stalls.

During the Granada Fair you can see the horse-drawn carriages with people dressed in the typical regional costumes, the flamenco atmosphere, the “casetas” and the decorated streets.

You can’t miss the Lanjarón Water Festival which is held on the night of June 23rd. It is a one and a half kilometer race. Along the way, water falls from balconies and streets, and participants bathe each other. The water is not wasted, as it is used to irrigate the land below the village.
